Kitty Genovese article

The original article from the New York Times about the murder of Kitty Genovese - very useful and shocking for students as an introduction to bystander behaviour. I often use this as base information, then get the students to design comic strips showing the build up and public reaction to the attack - captivates students and focusses their shock at the lack of reaction.

A introduction to the study by Piliavin et al. Usually play this with Coldplay's 'Fix You' in the background (quite atmospheric). Slides include images from the Kityy Genovese murder and the Jamie Bulger killing. Would perhaps use the following clip off youtube after the results of the study http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_96a7gakvAo

Astonishing news story about Wesley Autry, who threw himself onto the track in front of an oncoming train to protect an epileptic man who had fallen onto the track whilst having a fit. They both survived. Great for situational and dispositional causes in explaining behaviour, fits perfectly with Zimbardo work on everday heroes.

New York construction worker Wesley Autry rescued a young man from the subway tracks on which he fallen during a seizure. While 75 people watched from the platform, and did nothing, did something. He handed over his two daughters to a stranger to care for them as he jumped down on the tracks and held down the man between the two tracks as the subway train ran over them. Both survived. Zimbardo has moved on from showing how social situations can elicit unthinkably evil behaviour to how ordinary

I used this clip as part of an introduction to social psychology and bystander behaviour; another modern take on kitty genovese; a woman keels over in hospital waiting room and dies while onlookers peer at her and do nothing.
