A very quick exercise to recall details of Kanzi's training. Students are given the cards with key elements of Kanzi's development. They have to add them to the timeline on the second page. (I blew this up to A3 and completed as a starter, could also peg onto a washing line)

Use this with your students to show them how Kanzi learnt to communicate with his researchers. Get students to use the lexigram to tell a partner about what they did before coming to college this morning. A third student records the exchange. Will look particularly good if laminated.

What makes us human

What makes us human – animal language shows Nim in first two minutes, then Lana, then Kanzi cooking onions with Sue S-R,  showing how blind tests were done – over phone, with Sue having a welder’s mask on. Discussion suggests that this is far short of what children do. By 5 minutes the focus is on human language instinct and brain – looks at Broca – at 8 minutes looks at a family with a genetic speech disorder looking at a gene for language

Sue Savage-Rumbaugh lecture

Savage-Rumbaugh asks whether uniquely human traits, and other animals' behaviours, are hardwired by species. Then she rolls a video that makes you think: maybe not. The bonobo apes she works with understand spoken English. One follows her instructions to take a cigarette lighter from her pocket and use it to start a fire. Bonobos are shown making tools, drawing symbols to communicate, and playing Pac-Man -- all tasks learned just by watching. Maybe it's not always biology that causes a species
