Hi all,

We are moving to families and households next year and I'm just starting to look at some potential assessment questions for throughout the year. Just had a few questions about the following question from the Webb et al book:

...evaluate sociological contributions to our understanding of family diversity (20)

The Webb book's examiners advice is to include 2 debates around how much diversity there is and whether this diversity is good and bad.

Would it also be possible for this question to outline various different types of diversity and explanations for them, then evaluate with alternative explanations.

1) Lone parenthood; individualisation thesis. Evaluate with New Right.

2) Same sex couples; New Right (negative). Evaluate with Postmodernism

etc etc

Any advice/reassurance would be useful!

Personally, I would use a theoretical approach, rather than approaching it via family types:

New Right- lone parenthood and same sex marriage.

Postmodernism- choice and risk

Feminism- anti-nuclear family

Functionalism- against family diversity

I spose you would evaliate as you go along by contrasting the different theories
