I'm somewhat unfamiliar with Edexcel - are there likely to be any questions where students must design a study (as there are with AQA and OCR)?

Are you talking about the A level? They have to carry out 6 practicals over the two years that they could get direct questions on (how was data collected / suggest one improvement to the way you collected data / give one finding etc.) They also have data handling questions, graphs stats analysis. I think I have seen one question on "how would you improve...." and there was a question on the Paper 2 this year which asked how someone could get a random sample for a study described in the stimulus material. I guess they could be asked to describe how data could be collected but they wont get a long answer question (> 6 marks)
